I'm patiently waiting for Viktor to get his pinky swear with Sephie, The third book is great, and I have also been wondering where the demons go that Stephen scares away. . I think all 3 books are great, for me it's a wonderful love story between Adrick and Sephie. Also, like the fact all the other guys care for her and protect her. Am patiently waiting for volume four.

I’m concerned that Viktor hasn’t gotten his pinky swear. Stephen’s humor resonates with me. He’s such a love…

It's not as glamorous as one might think. I was bored and mad that everything on TV at the time was trash. I started writing on a whim, mostly to see if I could do it, and then never stopped. I was planning on using this series as a test-run to see if people would want to read what I had to write. Pretty sure I got my answer on that one.

I apologize if this was asked before in the previous Q&A.

I love your descriptions of all of the characters because while there is enough to semi-visualize each one, there is also enough unsaid that each reader's imagination can fill in the blanks. Since each person has their own definition of "hot, handsome, beautiful, sexy" all of the characters are automatically individualized for each reader.

Did you have any real life person in mind as the inspiration for the various characters? If so, for all of them, or just one or two? (Not asking for you to name them, as that would defeat the purpose of leaving some details for each reader to imagine.)

Expand full comment
RJ Kane's avatar

I do not. All the characters come from my imagination, which is another reason for never releasing any real-life models for them. A few readers have at least been in the ballpark on a few of the characters, but I have yet to find any person that looks like what the characters do in my head.

Ok so I have a question about the third book and don’t want to spoil for anyone who hasn’t finished it yet. So please skip over if you haven’t finished. But when Steven scares the demons away by talking/touching someone what happens to those demons? Do they go to an abyss and never appear again like they are neutralized or can they attach to someone else later? I know Adrik takes the demon/soul away which is different. Just wondering what happens to the demon when Steven makes them vanish.

RJ Kane's avatar

Absolutely a fair question. The only problem is I can't answer it without inevitably spoiling what's to come. What I will tell you is that you'll get your answer. Eventually.

I adore the tight knit relationships between the guys and Sephie. As someone without brothers (but many male cousins!), I always dreamed of having a group like that who would burn the world for you. Do you have a group in your life that inspired the beautiful relationships between them all?

RJ Kane's avatar

This answer might ruin it a little for you, so keep that in mind if you choose to continue reading. The short answer is not really. I have two people that I would consider to be very close friends, but not necessarily in the same sense as what I write about. That being said, those types of relationships that are in the books don't always show up in human form in real life. This is something I'm going to touch on in the Substack coming out next week, but probably not in the way you're thinking. Or hoping.

I look forward to reading that one, then!

I definitely have a handful of very close people as I suppose do you, but that idea of those older brothers who are there unconditionally just warms my heart so much to read about - real or fiction! I love that you do have those close friends, though. Everyone needs their tribe 🥰

Stephen is the only one without a unique nickname for Sephie. Is there a reason behind that?

Expand full comment
RJ Kane's avatar

He actually does have his own nickname for her. It's just not as imaginative as everyone else's name for her. He's the only one that calls her Seph.

Will you be turning the Underworld series into audible versions as well? I have enjoyed reading and re-reading volumes 1-3. I would love to hear the characters come to life.

RJ Kane's avatar

I get asked this question quite often and it's not as simple an answer as many people believe. While I find it somewhat amusing that everyone now believes I'm made of money, or that I have the power of a large publishing house behind me, neither of those things are true. I'm self-publishing, which means I front the money to make the books a reality. This would also apply to an audio version. I have very strong opinions against AI, which leaves humans to read the story. Because of the accents and the number of characters and how often those characters are in every single scene of the story, it would need to be a full-on production to create an audible version of this, which means I would have to front more money than I have to make that happen. It's just not something I have the ability to do and given how many people who ask for an audible version also tell me how many times they've read the books, I'm struggling to see a real need for an audible version.

Will book four close the series, or will there be more?

Expand full comment
RJ Kane's avatar

Volume four will not be the end. That being said, I don't have an answer for how many volumes will be in the series. As many as necessary to tell the story.

I'm curious where the inspiration for the super natural aspects of the story come from. I know it's just a story, still, when people refer to their demons IRL it's more the trauma they are processing, not an actual demon, or is it? Powers, gifts, reading thoughts, ESP, exorcism (basically), multiple lives, karma, auras, heaven/hell... it's all quite a mash up of multiple belief structures. Why some aspects and not others?

Expand full comment
RJ Kane's avatar

So this is a complicated answer and one that I can't fully answer without inevitably giving spoilers away. I will say, however, that much of the supernatural aspects as well as what beliefs are included all come from a lifetime of trying to understand the human condition. It's not as much of a mash up as it might appear on the surface, either. There are connecting ideologies and many more similarities than not if you look closely in every major religion/belief system in the world today and they're all incredibly similar to ancient belief systems. The Egyptians were telling the same stories we tell today, just with different names. What you think of as a mash up is more a way to show that everything is much more connected than most people realize.

I’ve been rereading the Q&As and something has been coming to my mind for a while but I think I’m just overthinking. Seasons are mentioned throughout the books, but I haven’t seen any reference to any holidays, birthdays, etc. Just wondered because the guys are always trying to make Sephie happy and surprise her. They do grand gestures (like her mom’s piano, her ring, etc) so I was just wondering about some of the holidays.

RJ Kane's avatar

I realize there is an insane amount of details included already and most readers have come to expect it. That being said, it's an author's choice to decide which details get included and which don't. These are details I did not deem necessary. At some point, I have to draw the line on how much I have to keep track of as I'm writing. The thought of keeping track of those extra details, that really don't matter in the grand scheme of things, well, irritates me.

I have two distinctive favorite cookies: the one to bake (chewy coconut cookies from allrecipes.com) and the one to eat (chocolate crinkles from America’s Test Kitchen). Do you have such cookie categories?

Expand full comment
RJ Kane's avatar

Why would you only bake a cookie and not eat it? I mean, even if you're giving them away, you always keep a couple off the top. Gotta make the numbers even and what not. Pretty much all cookies fall under the eating category.

Unless we're talking about oatmeal raisin, in which case I have a strong argument on why those abominations shouldn't be either category.
